Background
North of University Avenue and east of Broadway, the neighborhood's Craftsman-style bungalows were built in the first three decades of this century and housed many CU faculty and staff members. The area has been distinguished as a solid example of the arts-and-crafts style of architecture of the 1920s and 1930s.

It was named one of the state's most endangered historic places by the nonprofit Colorado Preservation Inc. in 1999. CU owns most structures in the 12-acre neighborhood, starting with acquisitions in 1968.

In the summer of 1999, CU and Historic Boulder agreed to a controversial compromise plan that would preserve five of the bungalows in a reserve area. Most of the other large historic buildings in the area also would be left alone. CU officials plan to either demolish or relocate the rest to make room for new buildings and a parking garage.

Talks of moving the buildings to preserved sites or maintaining the buildings have surfaced, but the enormity of the cost have soured many on both sides of the debate.

What preservationists want
Historic Boulder and the Colorado Arts and Crafts Society have lobbied to preserve the Grandview neighborhood because of its architectural and cultural significance.

The groups say razing of the area will forever destroy an intergal piece of Boulder's cultural heritage and believe that while CU owns a majority of the property, the university also has a responsibility toward preserving the site for future generations' benefit.

On Nov. 16, despite property owners' objections, the Colorado Historic Preservation Review Board declared Boulder's Grandview Terrace neighborhood architecturally distinctive and recommended it be nominated for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places.

What CU wants
The university, while claiming to carry out its responsibility as stewards of property in the public interest, has made no bones about its plans to demolish much of the neighborhood.

CU's main goal is to provide some 800 much-needed parking spaces, as well as other university facilities.

The university has also noted that the current preservation of the neighborhood is costing taxpayers too much and that the sooner the area is razed, the better.
