LAFAYETTE

City water restrictions show water savings

Lafayette residents have saved 22 million gallons of water since the city imposed tough outdoor watering restrictions, initial city figures show.

"We have the ability to track customer demand on the water supply daily, hour to hour, and what we are seeing is very encouraging," Lafayette Public Works Director Doug Short said in announcing initial tracking data.

The figures showed a reduction in outdoor water use by an average of 80 percent, Short said. That translated to a savings of 22 million gallons of water, compared with water used for outdoor irrigation in the same time period over the last two years.

Residents also appear to be following the water restrictions, he said.

The City Council enacted an emergency drought ordinance on May 21, limiting, among other things, outdoor watering to once a week. The goal was to cut water use by 75 percent.

COLORADO

White River plan to be released Tuesday

The 15-year future of the White River National Forest will be revealed in an official new forest management plan, scheduled for release Tuesday.

The 1999 draft forest plan was controversial because forest managers suggested limiting off-road vehicles and ski area expansions, and maintaining water flows for wildlife and recreationalists, said Jamey Fidel of the Aspen Wilderness Workshop.

Forest Service officials received nearly 14,000 comments on the draft plan and revised it based on those comments and other "directives," said Vinnie Picard, public affairs specialist for the White River National Forest. He declined to discuss public comments and directives in detail.

The White River includes several wilderness areas — Holy Cross, Flat Tops and Maroon Bells, for example — and ski resorts Vail, Beaver Creek and Aspen.

Environmentalists are worried that the Bush administration will roll back some of the proposed protections, said Melinda Kassen with Trout Unlimited in Boulder.
