City terminates public works director

City Director of Public Works Barbara Huner was fired this week, and an investigation is pending. Huner, who was put on paid administrative leave May 8, is appealing her release.

The city put Huner and two other Public Works Division staff members, Debi Sadar and Mike Woodruff, on paid administrative leave earlier this month pending an internal investigation.

City spokeswoman Rae Mims said she could not release details about the investigation because it is a personnel matter. However, it is not a criminal matter, she said in a statement.

Sadar, a senior traffic signal technician, returned to work this week. Woodruff, Public Works operations manager, has resigned.

Base Line students raise money for leukemia

Base Line Middle School students on Thursday made a donation of $15,000 to the Leukemia Society.

Base Line students raise money for the Leukemia Society every year, a tradition that started in 1976 when Base Line student Mike Black died from the disease. As the students prepared for the event in March, they lost another classmate, Jim Kerns, to complications from the disease.

Typically, students raise about $2,500, and Mike Black's father, Stan Black, matches the contribution. This year, the students raised $10,000 in pennies in three weeks. Stan Black contributed an additional $5,000.

Annual Circle Boulder bike ride set Sunday

Cyclists wanting to tour Boulder have a chance to do so with a lot of company Sunday afternoon.

The city's 5th Annual Circle Boulder by Bike B360 and B180 ride around Boulder starts between 3 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. Registration at Scott Carpenter Park is free. The city requires that riders wear helmets during the event.

The ride uses city bike paths and trails to lap Boulder, starting from Scott Carpenter Park. The full loop around the city is 24 miles, while a half-lap is about 10 miles.

Sponsors are hosting a party in the ark after the ride, with music, refreshments and prizes for registered riders.

To look at a map of the ride online, visit www.ci.boulder.co.us, click on "services & departments," then on "greenways," then on "events and meetings" and go the section titled "Circle Boulder by Bike."

Located 1 mile south of Longmont on the east side of U.S. 287, the museum is open to the public from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays through Sept. 1.

Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for children ages 6-12. Children under 6 years get in free. Those who visit the museum are asked to sign a guest book and can return for free for the rest of the summer.
